The following is a list of those Americans who are Prisoners of War (POW), Missing in Action (MIA), or Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) from the Persian Gulf War (January 1991) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (March 19, 2003):

MISSING IN ACTION

Navy Lt.Cdr. Michael Scott Speicher, Jacksonville, Fl.

January 17, 1991: Lt. Cdr. (now Captain) Speicher was declared killed in action.

UPDATES

January 10, 2001: Status was changed to missing in action. This change was based on evidence at the scene of his crash site and eye witness accounts.

April 24, 2003: While searching a Bagdad prison, U. S. military found the initials of Capt. Speicher (MSS) scratched into a wall of the cells. No further information is known.

August 02, 2009: The Department of Defense has announced they found and identified the remains of Capt. Michael Speicher.





Operation Iraqi Freedom

April 9, 2004

Army Pfc. Keith M. Maupin, Batavia, Ohio

Pfc. Maupin has been unaccounted for since his convoy came under attack.

UPDATES

April 16, 2004: A video tape was released showing Pfc. Maupin alive and according to the tape, he is being held hostage by unknown people in Iraqi.

April 23, 2004: Today the Department of Defense changed the status of Pfc. Maupin from DUSTWUN to CAPTURED.

September 2006: Pfc. Keith M. Maupin was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.

March 31, 2008: The Department of Defense identified the remains found as Staff Sergeant Maupin.

Army Spc. Kousay Altaie

Today, November 2, 2006, the Department of Defencse confirmed the identify of Spc. Kousay Altaie as the soldier who was kidnapped on October 23, 2006.

UPDATES

December 14, 2006: Today the Department of Defense changed the status of Spc. Altaie from DUSTWUN to CAPTURED.

February 14, 2007: A man identified as U.S. soldier Ahmed K. Altaie appeared in a video Wednesday posted on a Web site used by militants. The uncle of Spc. Kousay Altaiepc identified his missing nephew Wednesday in a video posted on a militant Shiite Web site.

February 25, 2012: The U.S. Army announced that they have identified the remains of Army Spc. Ahmed K. Altaie.

Today, May 15, 2007, the Department of Defense announced that the above named soldiers are listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Their patrol was attacked by enemy forces using automatic fire and explosives in Al Taqa, Iraq.

June 27, 2007: Today the Department of Defense changed the status of Army Pvt. Byron W. Fouty and Army Spc. Alex R. Jimenez from DUSTWUN to CAPTURED.

July 11, 2008: Today the Department of Defense notified the families that they have recovered and identified the remains of Army Pvt. Byron W. Fouty and Army Spc. Alex R. Jimenez.
